Possum Tales - Part 2
One day, I went out to tuck the chickens in at night. For some reason, I decided to look in the henhouse to make sure that everything was alright. On this fine evening, about 2 weeks ago, there was a POSSUM looking back at me from on top of the nesting boxes. I shrieked and ran to get a net. Possums are definately NOT welcome in my henhouse. We had recently lost two broody hens to predators and had relocated one very vigorous raccoon the week before. There was one hen still trying to hatch a nest on the floor of the henhouse and I didn't want her killed. When I returned with the net, the possum scooted down the back of the nesting boxes, out around my net and through the door into the adjoining henhouse room. I quickly shut the room I was in and blocked the entrance to the other room. Then searched in vain for 20 minutes in the enclosed henhouse for the agile possum. Never caught sight of it again. Never even figured out how it could have gotten out of a closed-up henhouse. Most worrying. I set up the humane trap inside the henhouse for the night, but only managed to catch one of my hens. She was NOT happy, despite a lovely snack of cat food. And a week of setting up the trap outside the henhouse yielded no results.
