As I was settling in to bed last week, Brian came in from outside, "JULIE- I NEED YOU!" There being visiting children in the house, I knew it was likely to be something that he didn't want to shout in front of impressionable ears and jumped up quickly. Once outside, he explained, "There's a POSSUM in the henhouse!" "Oh, good!" I exclaimed, "With both of us, we should be able to trap it!" We grabbed the net and headed for the henhouse. Unfortunately the possum was curled up tight in a nesting box and was not interested in coming out into the net. It decided that hissing and showing its' teeth was a much better idea. "I'll go get our fireplace gloves, so I can grab it!" I decided. Brian stood guard while I ran back to the house. The possum continued its' defiance. When I got back, Brian said, "Let me grab it- I would rather get bit than you." I reminded him that I am the only one in our family vaccinated against rabies and told him to just back me up. We debated where to grab the angry critter and I decided the tail would be the most sturdy handle. So I grabbed and was able to neatly yank the critter out of the box and deposit it in our humane trap. It was a beautiful moment of successful teamwork and we neatly high-fived each other.
The next day, we had to drive the kids to summer camp, and the possum took the trip to the local state park about 10 miles away. On the way, we were discussing how this possum would do well there as it was obviously a young adult.
Can I tell you why I love my husband? He let me figure out on my OWN that this was likely the very same animal I released in our backyard, o those many moons ago. And never said "I told you so!" I had hysterical giggles for over a half an hour as I pondered the absurdity of me allowing that little possum to grow up near my beloved birds. My kids did too. Brian just smiled..... What a man!
